Music

Mr T Hooper

Overview

The Music Department at Fulbrook offers a broad range of opportunities for all students to enjoy music-making, both in and out of the classroom. The subject is known for its high quality of teaching, and the standard of our thriving extra-curricular programme, such as our chamber choir, school choir, jazz band, orchestra, and music theory club. If pupils wish to set-up their own small ensemble (string groups, rock groups) then these can be factored into the departmental timetable upon request. Our department is challenging and engaging, inclusive, and of course a lot of fun.

In the classroom, students explore the interconnected skills of performance, composing and listening, learning a variety of musical styles and traditions. Students look at a range of musical styles from other countries, as well as both traditional and contemporary approaches to ‘classical’ music-making. Emphasis is placed on practical music-making, with a wealth of opportunities for students to sing, play and compose with others. We recognise the importance of aural awareness and work to enhance pupils’ skills through practical activities embedded within our topics. We aspire for our students to develop a strong musical identity, and leave their key stage 3 music course with a love and passion for music, regardless of their future subject choices.

Fulbrook is a singing school and we are proud of the importance we place on music and the Arts. We hold an annual Christmas Concert, Summer Concert, school production, Young Musician of the Year competition, and other local events within our community, where possible.

If pupils learn a musical instrument at school, then there is an expectation for them to participate in at least one ensemble per week. Equally, if pupils who do not have instrumental lessons wish to join in, then they will always be welcome and adaptations made.

Our department’s ethos, ‘All we see is sky, for forever’ is a quote taken from the musical ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ and encapsulates the idea that any pupil, from any background and any ability will have the opportunity to flourish here.
